A Simple Note to Truthseekers

It is a wrong notion that the HOLY SPIRIT dwells to all people who profess belief and faith in Jesus. Indeed, the Bible is explicit in teaching us that only those whom He has called to be His own shall receive the gift of the HOLY SPIRIT (John 14:17; I John 4:13). For, if it is true that the HOLY SPIRIT dwells to all those who believe in Christ, these questions will arise:

“Why is it that there is not one interpretation of the Bible that we could hear today from various Christian professing religions? Why do these various Christian professing religions differ in faith and practices?

This truth remains: that the HOLY SPIRIT DWELLS ONLY to those who belong to the BODY of Christ, His CHURCH….

Although the Holy Spirit does not dwell to all man especially the unbelievers, God gave all man the gift of FREE WILL-- the FREEDOM OF CHOICE-- to choose between right and wrong, between good and evil, between life and death (Deut. 30:15). It is this freedom then that will help one choose between truth and fallacy—between biblical and unbiblical doctrine.

HUMAN WISDOM and REASONING

Having gained knowledge and wisdom from formal and informal education, man has developed the power of reason. Indeed, it is not wrong to make use of this power or ability to weigh things out—to accept or reject opinions, principles or ideas. However, overuse of this ability is disadvantageous to an individual. It may cause a person to reject a proven fact and accept assumptions or lies. Biblically, the wisdom of this world should not be relied on to reason out for the things of God. For the wisdom that the world offers is sensual, deceiving, devilish(James 3:15). The Bible adds: “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. (I Cor. 3:19, KJV)

USING THE HEART

It is more effective to use one’s heart to understand God’s will. The Bible is explicit in telling us that:

“For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. (Rom. 10:10,KJV)

It is by heart that one could discern what God wants Him to understand. For “the heart of the prudent getteth knowledge; and the ear of the wise seeketh knowledge.(Pro. 18:15, KJV)

Indeed, God has made this promise: “Blessed [are] the pure in heart: for they shall see God.” (Mat. 5:8, Ibid.)

Let us now cite God’s directive to those WHO SEEK for God’s truth:

“Thus says the Lord: "Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, 'We will not walk in it.' “(Jer. 6:16, NKJV)

God commands us to seek and ask for the good way amidst the many ways created by men. We must, therefore, search for and examine which among the different beliefs and religions being presented to us is the good way. Once we find it, God instruct us to “walk in it” to find rest for our souls.
(God's Message, Feb. 1997, p. 9)

With modern communication technology, it becomes easier now than ever to go into the entire world and deliver the message of salvation. However, the same technology can also be and are in fact being employed by many to disseminate evil messages, belief, attitudes, propaganda, and pornography among others.

But, what makes the Iglesia Ni Cristo’s use of the same modes of communication in the process of evangelizing and proselytizing different from the rest? The difference lies in the message. While many false preachers abound as had been forwarned by Christ (Mt. 24:110), the Iglesia Ni Cristo teaches only that which is written in the Scriptures. For it is the knowledge of the truth that man will be saved (I Tim. 2:3-4), On the other hand, lies and false teachings will surely lead man to death (Jn. 8:44; Rev. 20:10)(God’s Message Magazine. Feb. 2000, p. 3)

SEEK SPIRITUAL WISDOM FROM GOD'S AUTHORIZED PREACHERS

How can one attain the wisdom that comes from above? Through God’s authorized preachers of His words. God’s preachers or messengers possess the wisdom that comes from God. By learning from their teachings, one would arrive at the ultimate truth—the truth about God’s will and plans. What do these preachers of God have in them? In I Cor. 2:4-7, this is stated:

“And my speech and my preaching [was] not with enticing words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God. Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, [even] the hidden [wisdom], which God ordained before the world unto our glory.”(KJV)

It is indeed significant to receive instruction from the preachers of God’s word. In our time, there are various preachers who claim to have the word of God by using the Bible. Does it follow that whoever appears to be using the Bible must be preaching the truth and belong to the true religion? Apostle Paul gives us the answer in Gal. 1:6-8: “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed.” (NKJV)

Therefore, using the Bible does not automatically mean that a person is a true preacher. Using the Bible is one thing, preaching correctly the gospel contained therein is another. What then can a person do to know if what a preacher is teaching is the truth? Apostle John clarified this by saying:

“Beloved, believe not every spirit, but TRY the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.”(I John 4:1, KJV)[EMPHASIS MINE]

What a person is preaching must exactly what the Bible teaches. Does the preacher, for instance, belong to a religion which is called by a name found in the Bible? Do all the doctrines a preacher is expounding on comply with Scriptural truth? And can a preacher verify by citing specific verses that what he is preaching and practicing is commanded and sanctioned by God Himself and did not just come from man-made traditions, superstitions or opinions?
